By: Nigel Robinson

Gay sex is illegal in Northern Cyprus

Homosexuality to be decriminalised in Northern Cyprus.

7 December 2010

Hasan Bozer, the President of the Northern Cyprus Assembly, has promised to amend the laws that define homosexuality as a crime.

He made his comments after the recent Solidarity and Networking Conference Cyprus 2010, organised by the Initiative Against Homophobia Association in Nicosia.

The conference found that Northern Cyprus’s criminalisation of homosexuality was a “violation of human rights”.

Yoryis Regginos, a spokesman for the Southern Cyprus LGBT Organisation asked: “Why is the love between two male adults based on mutual consent a crime?”

He added: “We only want the rights that belong to everybody, And we will succeed."

Homosexuality is legal in Cyprus, but not in the disputed area of Northern Cyprus, which is currently under Turkish occupation.
