Carter, who served as President of the USA from 1977 – 1981, made the remarks on the bigthink website.
He said that the entire population of America had made “tremendous strides forwards” towards acceptance of gay people, and he compared this to how his country handled the race issue 40 years ago.
He did, however, admit it would be in the “near future”, rather than the next election, that America would be ready for a gay President.
“Step by step we have realised that this issue of homosexuality has the same adverse and progressive elements as when we dealt with the race issue… 40 years ago,” he said.
“So I would say that the country is getting acclimated to a President who might be female, who might obviously now be black and who might be, as well, a gay person.
“Yes, I would say the answer is yes.”
