House votes for repeal of military ban

16 December 2010

The policy, which prohibits openly gay men and women from serving in the US military, was defeated by 250 votes to 175.

The Bill must now be sent to the US Senate for approval.

Democrats who largely support the repeal of the law, are hopeful that they will be able to raise the 60 votes required in the Senate to pass the legislation.

The vote was welcomed by President Barack Obama who said that the repeal of the policy was “the right thing to do”.

Speaking in favour of the repeal, Nancy Pelosi, the Democrat Speaker of the House said: “’Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ doesn’t contribute to our national security and it contravenes our American values…

“America has always been the land of the free and the home of the brave. We are so because of our brave men and women in uniform to protect us. Let us honour their sacrifice, their service, their patriotism by recommitting to the values that they fight for on the battlefield.

“I urge my colleagues to end discrimination wherever it exists in our country. I urge them to end discrimination in the military to make America safer.”
