Chamberlain: gay actors should stay in the closet
28 December 2010
The 76-year-old star of Doctor Kildare and The Thorn Birds made the remarks to gay magazine the Advocate.
He said that he would not advice a gay leading man to come out because of the “tremendous” amount of homophobia in our culture. He called the situation “regrettable, stupid, heartless and immoral.”
“For an actor to be working at all is a kind of miracle, because most actors aren’t,” he said. “So it’s just silly for a working actor to say. ‘Oh, I don’t care if anybody knows I’m gay’ especially if you are a leading man.”
Chamberlain only came out in 2003 aged 69, after a successful career of playing straight romantic leads
