Gay intern saves Congresswoman's life

10 January 2011

David Hernandez Jr., who confirmed he was gay to LGBT newspaper Dallas Voice, had been working as an intern for only five days when the Congresswoman was shot at an outside meeting in Tucson, Arizona.

He told ABC News how he tended to the Congresswoman, after she had been hit.

“I had to lift up the Congresswoman because she was severely injured and I wanted to make sure that she was able to breathe OK because there was so much blood,” he told ABC.

“The Congresswoman was alert. She was able to hold my hand when I asked her if she could hear me. I wasn’t able to get any words from her.

“She may have been trying but because of the way that I was having to hold her it was a lot easier to just say, ‘If you can hear me, Gabby, just grab my hand to let me know that you’re OK.’”

Ms Giffords, who supported the repeal of the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” legislation, is in a critical condition in hospital but doctors are cautiously optimistic for her recovery.
Six others died in the attack and 22-year-old Jared Loughner has been charged with the attempted assassination.
