Gay Showbiz News: Glee's Jane Lynch denies Hollywood is homophobic - just that audiences aren’t ready for gays in lead roles
By: Nigel Robinson

Jane Lynch

Hollywood not homophobic, says Lynch

14 January 2011

Lynch, who plays coach Sue Sylvester in the top-rated show and who is a lesbian, told gay entertainment site AfterElton that she had never suffered any discrimination in her career.

However, she doubted that the time was right for openly gay actors to take on straight leading roles because audiences aren’t yet ready to accept them.
“Most of the world is straight, and what studios want is for people to project their hopes and their dream for romance onto these people, and I think that’s what stops them from casting gay people,” she said.
“It’s everybody looking at the bottom line…. I think they want their young Romeo/ Juliet archetypes to be straight.”

Lynch’s comments follow Richard Chamberlain's  recent comments that his fellow gay actors should stay in the closet if they want to work.
