MEPs urge Lithuania to scrap anti-gay law

It said that minors must be allowed free access to information about homosexuality, and that the European Union (EU) should produce a plan to combat homophobia in Europe. 

The decision follows what some MEPs have considered “a series of worrying events” in the former Soviet state which became a member of the EU in 2004. 

These included an attempted ban on gay pride marches, the use of hate speech by leading politicians, and a draft law which would criminalise any public expression or portrayal of homosexuality.

The MEPs also called on the European Union to directly address homophobia on the continent.  

“EU institutions and member states have a duty to ensure that human rights are respected in the European Union without distinction on grounds of sexual orientation,” they said.
