The offending cover

Elton covered up to "protect" young shoppers

The cover of the latest edition of Us magazine shows a smiling Elton John and his partner David Furnish, holding their new baby boy Zachary who was born by surrogacy on Christmas Day.

However the image proved too hot and controversial for a Harps supermarket in Arkansas which placed “family shields” over the offending image.

The “shields”, normally used to mask the covers of magazines such as Playboy, bear the words “to protect our young shoppers”.

In a statement on the Harps website CEO Kim B Eskew said: “For many years we have provided with shields which can be used at the manger’s discretion to cover the front of magazines when they receive complaints from our customers regarding either the photo on the cover of the magazine or the title of articles within the magazine.

“Sometimes these photos might be sexually provocative or too revealing. The magazine article titles might also be too suggestive for some customers.”

The magazine article title for this issue of Us reads: “Elton’s Baby – at home with Elton John, David Furnish and Baby Zachary”.

After reviewing the magazine cover, Eskew ordered for the shield to be removed and confirmed that the magazine was being displayed uncensored in all their stores.

In the magazine Elton John and David Furnish reveal that the important thing for them is that their new baby is healthy and happy and loved, and reveal that they don’t care whether he grows up to be gay or straight.
