Gay: The French constitutional court has upheld a ban on gay marriage as in keeping with the constitution
By: Nigel Robinson

58% approve of gay marriage

French gay marriage ban is legal

 28 January 2011

The ban had been challenged by a lesbian couple, Corinne Cestino and Sophie Hasslauer, who have been together for fifteen years and have raised four children.

The couple have been in a PACS (pacte civil de solidarité the French equivalent of a civil partnership) for ten years, but had wanted the right to marry.

“It is not so much about getting marred but about having the right to get married,” Ms Cestino had told news agency Associated Press.

In Europe only Belgium, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden allow same-sex marriage.

A recent opinion poll has found that 58% of French people approve of gay marriage.
