Gay News: A Ugandan lesbian in London gains temporary injuction against deportation
By: Nigel Robinson

Homosexuality is illegal in Uganda

Ugandan lesbian escapes deportation for now

29 January 2011

Brenda Namigadde, who fled Uganda for the UK in 2003 after her house was destroyed and she and her partner attacked, was due  to be deported to Uganda yesterday.

However, a last-minute injunction has gained her a temporary reprieve, while her case goes to judicial review.

Ms Namigadde had already boarded her plane at London's Heathrow airport when the injunction was granted.

Supporters of Ms Namigadde’s attempt to remain in the country claim she will be tortured or killed if she returns, and faces immediate arrest on touchdown at Entebbe airport

Only two days ago in Uganda a leading gay activist  was found murdered in his home, months after a Ugandan newspaper had published the names and address of 100 gay Ugandans, under the headline “Hang them”.

The UK Border Agency has said that Ms Namigadde’s case had been considered by the UK Border Agency and the courts on two separate occasions and that an immigration judge had decided that, on the basis of the evidence before him, Ms Namigaddde was not a lesbian.

Her lawyers say that she should be allowed to remain in the UK regardless of her sexuality.
