Gay News: The Archbishop of Canterbury has condemned the murder of gay rights activist David Kato in Uganda.

Archbishop condemns Ugandan murder

31 January 2011

Kato was killed last week after a Ugandan newspaper had published his name and those of other gay Ugandans under the headline “Hang them”

Speaking at a press conference during the Anglican Church’s bi-annual meeting on Dublin, the Archbishop, Rowan Williams, said:

“You cannot go around sharing information about the identity of proposed lesbian and gay persons and urging people to ostracise them or worse ‘hang them’ as in the headlines of one of the Ugandan newspapers.”

He went on: “You cannot do that without taking responsibility for the consequences. Language which demonises gays and lesbians has consequences.”

His comments were backed up by the Anglican leaders attending the conference.

In a statement they called on the clergy “to minister pastorally and sensitively to all irrespective of sexual orientation and condemn irrational fear of gay people…

“We join with [the Archbishop] in saying that no one should have to live in fear because of the bigotry of others.”

The Archbishop of Uganda, the Most Reverend Henry Luke Orombi, boycotted the conference along with other Archbishops, who argue that homosexuality has no part in the Anglican priesthood.

He has yet to comment on David Kato’s murder.
