Ladyboys take to the skies

11 February 2011

Charter company PC Air, which will start operations in April, has recruited four ladyboys as flight attendants, alongside nineteen female and seven male attendants.

The company had initially not planned on recruiting any ladyboys as attendants but were overwhelmed by the 100 job applications they received from transvestites and transsexuals.

“Ladyboys”, or “katoeys”, are generally widely accepted in Thailand, where they work in a variety of jobs, as well as in the entertainment industry.

The airline said that the qualifications demanded of the ladyboys were the same as those for female flight attendants.

However, the ladyboys also had to undergo a lengthy interview process to make sure that they walked and talked like women and had a feminine voice and the right attitude.

“When I knew that I got this job, I burst into tears because I’m very happy,” said 24-year-old Chayathisa Nakmai who had unsuccessfully sent many applications to other airlines.

Dissanai Chitpraphachin, who was crowned Thailand’s most beautiful transvestite in 2007, admitted that the ladyboy flight attendants would have to work harder than their female colleagues.

“People will keep their eyes on us,” she said. “We have to prepare ourselves more than the women.”

PC Air will initially fly to South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and China.
