Facebook includes civil partnerships

Gay and lesbian couples can now update their relationship status on Facebook to “civil union” or “domestic partnership”.

Previously the only available options were “single”, “in a relationship”, “married”, “engaged”, “widowed”, “separated” and “divorced”.

From yesterday the change was available to Facebook users in the USA, the UK, Canada, France and Australia.

In a statement, Jarrett Barrios, President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and one of the gay organisations Facebook had consulted, said:

“Today Facebook sent a clear message in support of gay and lesbian couples to users across the globe.

“By acknowledging the relationships of countless loving and committed same-sex couples in the US and abroad, Facebook has set a new standard of inclusion for social media.

“As public support for marriage equality continues to grow, we will continue to work for the day when all couples have the opportunity to marry and have their relationship recognised by their community both online and off.”

Facebook has over 600 million active users nationwide.
