Gay News: Students at a high school in Illinois can wear T shirts bearing anti-gay messages

The Court ruled that forbidding the students to wear the T shirt would violate their First Amendment right to free speech.
“A school that permits advocacy of the rights of homosexual students cannot be permitted to stifle criticism of homosexuality,” Judge Richard Posner said.
The case was brought by the Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian legal group.
Superintendent Kathy Birkett of the
“School administrators work diligently to make sure the school environment feels safe so all students can focus on learning,” she told the Chicago Tribune. “As educators we believe derogatory speech is a distraction that can prevent students from achieving their best.”
Students are intending to wear the T shirts on the annual “Day of Silence” on 15 April when other students will remain silent in support of gay rights.
