Gay Pride News: The recession has meant that this year's Liverpool Pride will not take place in the city's gay village

Liverpool Pride forced out of gay village
Organisers of the event have reported that they don’t have the funds to close off streets in the city’s gay quarter which centres on Dale Street and Stanley Street.
Instead the event will take place at the Pier Head, on the banks of the Mersey.
Liverpool Pride Chair Tommy McIlravey told the Liverpool Echo:
“Obviously we were disappointed to have to move out of Dale Street and the gay quarter but, like just about every charity at the moment, we have had to tighten our belts in order to survive.
“Closing such a huge area of the city centre is a difficult and expensive operation, so we had to look at a range of alternative spaces.”
He went on to say that he was delighted that the Pier Head would be the location for this year’s Liverpool Pride.
“It is a wonderful space and part of the iconic waterfront of Liverpool that is recognisable throughout the world. Being there is a real symbol of how much Merseyside is behind the Liverpool Pride event.”
Last year’s first Liverpool Pride attracted 21,000 people to the gay village.
This year’s Liverpool Pride takes place on 6 August, and will start at Saint George’s Plateau, before moving down to Pier Head for the festival.
