The first to get married as the law came into force in Sunday were Kitty Lambert and Cheryl Rudd from Buffalo, who were married by Niagara Falls, whose waters reflected the colours of the rainbow flag for the event.
In total 659 same-sex couples were married in New York which has now become the sixth most populous state in the US to recognise gay marriage.
In a statement, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that it had been an historic day for New York.
“We couldn’t be prouder that on the first day that everyone in New York City could have their love affirmed in the eyes of the law we were able to serve everyone,” he said.
In a statement the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force said:
“We are thrilled for the couples who will marry today, tomorrow, the next day, and beyond. To finally be able to share and celebrate one’s love and commitment legally and publicly is a lifelong dream for many couples and families.
“Until you have walked in the shoes of someone who has been denied this fundamental freedom — a rite that bonds us as a people — it is hard to comprehend just how profoundly moving this moment is. Today is a day to rejoice and celebrate.”
