International anger over alleged Peru gay police rape.
"the victim alleges that he was repeatedly raped by three policemen because he was gay"
The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) has called for the international gay community to put pressure on the Peruvian authorities to justly deal with the case of a 26-year-old man who alleges that he was raped by three policemen while in their custody.
On the 25th of February the victim, Luis Alberto Rojas Marín, alleges that he was repeatedly raped and subjected to various forms of sexual abuse by three policemen because of his sexuality.
The case went to court and last month the judge ordered that the policemen in question be remanded in custody. This unusual move by the judge was met by public outcry from the family of the policemen and police supporters. They even took to the streets in protest at the judge’s decision, the first time that Peruvian policemen have been arrested on the grounds of hate crimes and discrimination.
The protest led to magistrates from the La Libertad Regional Judicial Court releasing the three men a few weeks later, effectively nullifying the detention order. The IGLHRC are asking that community members write to put pressure on Peruvian authorities to take up the case.
The Peruvian police department is paying for the legal fees of the policemen charged with the attack.
