International Day Against Homophobia 17th May
"The removal of homosexuality from the WHO's list of mental disorders happened as recently as 1990"
On the 17th May 2008, gay men and lesbians from around the world will participate in the annual International Day Against Homophobia.
IDAHO commemorates the removal of homosexuality from the World Health Organisation's list of mental disorders, which unbelievably only happened as recently as 17th May 1990. Its aim is to provoke action to end homophobia around the world, educate people about the prejudice that is still very much in existence and highlight the fact that being gay is punishable by law in many countries.
The website www.idaho.org.uk has information on all the ways you can get involved - everything from lobbying the government to flying rainbow flags and putting up posters. There's also a list of events, exhibitions, talks, performances and more that have been lined up, both in the UK and overseas.
