Dr. Who's gay saviour stands down from duty

"The new series that takes Davies away from Dr. Who is set to be controversial"

It was the comeback of the decade. Dr. Who, the formerly risible (if well-beloved) Time Lord show reckoned to keep the nation at bay behind their sofas of a Saturday night came spinning back through time to - unexpectedly - become one of the most successful shows of recent times. With new Dr. Whos in the (much sexier) shape of David Tennant and Christopher Ecclestone, and with foxy new assistants, like Billie Piper's Rose, it was a multi-award winning smash hit.

Now, the gay writer credited with resurrecting the Doctor has announced that he is to quit the show in favour of new projects he's working on. Russell T. Davies, the writer who outraged the nation with his Channel 4 drama series Queer As Folk, will be replaced on the show by staff writer Steve Moffat.

The new series that takes Davies away from space and time is set to be as controversial as his "gay man falls in love with straight woman" series, Bob and Rose. "It's going to be about fortysomething gay men and how jealous they are of gay teenagers," he has said, setting cats among pigeons across the gay community. "I've been longing to write something for adults."

The first post-Davies series will be the fifth, not due to run until 2010.
