Gay-bashing victim speaks out against unrepentent homophobe Iris Robinson
"If anyone takes issue they are taking issue with the word of God"
The man whose attack launched Northern Ireland MP Iris Robinson into a stream of homophobic remarks has spoken out against the First Minister's wife in his first interview since he was "gay-bashed". In a statement to the BBC, Stephen Scott said, "I certainly will not rest until she stands down for what she's done because she's made my life hell since her comments."
Scott was attacked by a gang and drew comments from Stormont health committee chair Robinson that he should seek psychiatric help in order to help him renounce homosexuality. And rather than back down in the face of the storm of controversy her remarks provoked, including a demonstration outside Stormont today, Robinson not only stood by them but went further, comparing homosexuals to murderers in that both groups could repent of their sins. "Just as a murderer can be redeemed by the blood of Christ," she said, "so can a homosexual."
Defending her remarks as simply restating "the word of God" - "That is the word of God," she said, "and if anyone takes issue they are taking issue with the word of God" - Robinson also claimed her remarks should not reflect on her husband who is Northern Ireland's First Minister.
