US Senator John McCain openly declares his opposition to gay adoption

"[McCain] rejects the idea of same-sex adoption, claiming that a traditional nuclear family is key to bringing up children successfully"

Vietnam War veteran and presumptive Republican nominee for the President of the United States of America, John McCain has rejected the idea of same-sex adoption, claiming that a traditional nuclear family is key to bringing up children successfully.

Speaking to the New York Times, McCain commented, "I think that we've proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no, I don't believe in gay adoption."

His remarks have led to a stream of criticism from gay equality groups, including Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and the Family Equality Council.

Executive director of PFLAG Jody M. Huckaby responded, "Love makes a family, but short-sighted positions like Senator McCain’s can certainly tear families apart, too.

The American Psychological Association also stated the case for homosexual adoptive parents, "Gay and lesbian parents are as likely as heterosexual parents to provide healthy and supportive environments for their children."

McCain, who is an adoptive parent himself, has so far fought off competition from other Republican hopeful Mike Huckabee. While he has won enough delegates to become the Republican nominee, he won’t be officially announced as the party’s representative until delegates cast their final votes at the Republican National Convention in September.
