California announces annual day to honour gay civil rights leader Harvey Milk
"Both houses of our Legislature have now honoured Harvey Milk's important civil rights legacy"
Harvey Milk's time has come. Not only are there two Hollywood movies currently in production telling the story of the openly gay San Francisco city counsellor who was brutally murdered in 1978 - one starring Sean Penn as Milk - but his home state of California has voted to devote a day to him. From next year 22nd May will be Harvey Milk Day.
"Both houses of our Legislature have now honoured Harvey Milk's important civil rights legacy, and I am hopeful that the governor will sign this bill so that California officially recognises the message of hope and pride his life inspired," said Assembly Member Mark Leno, who authored the bill to create Harvey Milk Day and who is just waiting for Schwartzenegger's signature to make the bill law.
The Day, Milk's birthday, will, if the bill is passed, not be a public holiday but schools have been asked to be especially mindful of the lessons taught by civil rights leaders such as Milk on that day of all days.
