Rowan Williams' letters proves he's naturally pro-gay
By: John Howard

Archbishop of Canterbury

Archbishop's gay past finally catches up with him.

"He even says that the offending passages in Leviticus are intended for straight people to ensure they don't experiment sexually"

Letters sent by the Archbishop of Canterbury when he was still Archbishop of Wales show that his true stance on homosexuality is that it may well reflect the love of God. He even says that the offending passages in Leviticus, which are used by homophobic clerics to prove that homosexuality is forbidden by the Bible, are intended for straight people to ensure they don't experiment sexually, and not for people who are naturally gay.

The letters date from 2000 and 2001 and go so far as to voice his optimism that one day the church would soften its stance on matters relating to sexuality. "The church has shifted its stance on several matters," he says, "notably the rightness of lending money at interest and the moral admissibility of contraception, so I am bound to ask if this is another such issue."

The letters come days after Williams headed off a full-scale revolt at the Lambeth Conference where hard-liners were calling for him to discipline a US church for consecrating an openly gay man - Gene Robinson - as a bishop.
