"Liverpool's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Network set up the Facebook group to highlight the need for a Pride Festival in their city"
A gay group created on social network Facebook has attracted almost 2,000 supporters online.
Liverpool's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Network set up the Facebook group to highlight the need for a Pride Festival in their city, which is the sixth most populous in the country.
The Pride Working Group, formed on 27th August, realise that the number of Facebook members is only the first step in their campaign, but hope it will prove to local authorities "that Liverpool has the support to stage a successful LGBT Pride in the city."
The call for a Liverpool Pride follows the death of Michael Causer on 2nd August, who died in what police believe may have been a homophobic attack in Merseyside. Liverpool's LGBT Network has established a fund in his memory, which will assist Causer's family where appropriate.
The Facebook group also looks east-ward to Manchester's successful Pride celebrations and Gay Village, and hopes that Liverpool will raise its gay profile in a similar way. The city has begun to develop LGBT initiatives, including an expansion of the Gay Quarter and the creation of Homotopia, Liverpool's annual celebration of Queer Culture. Supporters of the group feel this is evidence enough "that Liverpool is a vibrant and diverse city, deserving of its own Pride festival."
