Brad Pitt joins the fight against the same-sex marriage ban

"because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8"

Brad Pitt has donated $100,000 to the campaign against the same-sex marriage ban.

The proposed ballot initiative, which will declare that only marriage between a man and a woman is legal, is widely known as Proposition 8.

The money is the largest amount thus far to be given to the campaign, although thousands of dollars have been donated to the groups both against and in favour of the proposition.

This is not the first time that Pitt has shown his support for gay marriage; in 2006 he stated that he and Angelina Jolie would not tie the knot while same-sex marriage was still illegal. In a statement the actor said:

"Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn't harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8."

Political strategist Chad Griffin is helping to coordinate efforts in the entertainment industry to defeat Proposition 8. He hopes that Pitt's generous offer will encourage other like-minded stars to donate, particularly as Democratic billionaire Ron Burkle is due to host a fundraising event in October for this very reason.
