2008 Stonewall Awards Nominations announcedââ¬Â¦
"MP Iris Robinson has been nominated for the Bigot of the Year award"
The list of hopefuls to win a prestigious Stonewall award has been announced today.
Among those nominated are Never Mind the Buzzcocks’ presenter Simon Amstell, singer Sam Sparro, and Mary Portas, host of Mary Queen of Shops for Entertainer of the Year.
Other categories include Journalist of the Year which sees Thelondonpaper columnist Joshua Hunt and Daily Mirror agony aunt Miriam Stoppard nominated. Publication of the Year, which features Attitude and Out in the City among others and Broadcast and Broadcaster of the Year which shortlisted Wife Swap, Fi Glover and Skins for the gong.
MP Iris Robinson has been nominated for the Bigot of the Year award for her controversial comments comparing homosexuality to child abuse, earlier this year. Meanwhile gay Bishop Gene Robinson is up for Hero of the Year.
The annual ceremony, which this year is sponsored by Barclays, celebrates those who have positively impacted the lives of LGBT people.
Stonewall’s Ben Summerskill said of this years nominees:
"It's hugely encouraging that every year the shortlists of nominees for the Stonewall Awards get more varied.
"This reflects an increasingly gay-friendly modern Britain, where equality is being built into the everyday lives of millions of people."
The Stonewall Awards 2008 will be held at the V&A at 7pm on Thursday 6th November.
