Google against Proposition 8

Google opposes California's proposed ban on same-sex marriage
"Over the last few weeks celebrities such as Brad Pitt and Steven Spielberg have lent their voice to the opposition of Proposition 8."
Internet company Google has become the latest in a line of high profile businesses and personalities to openly oppose an attempt to ban same-sex marriage in California.
Google, which employs almost 20,000 people, has its headquarters, known as the 'Googleplex', in California. Co-founder Sergey Brin posted a blog citing inequality as one of his reasons to publicly oppose the campaign: "While there are many objections to this proposition - further government encroachment on personal lives, ambiguously written text - it is the chilling and discriminatory effect of the proposition on many of our employees that brings Google to publicly oppose Proposition 8"
He continued: "While we respect the strongly held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality.
"We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 - we should not eliminate anyone's fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love."
Over the last few weeks celebrities such as Brad Pitt and Steven Spielberg have lent their voice to the opposition of Proposition 8.
The California Supreme Court over-turned the ban on same-sex marriages in the state in May. However, opponents of gay marriage collected more than a million signatures to secure the initiative a place on the November ballot for re-evaluation.
Earlier this year Human Rights Campaign, America's largest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights organisation, listed Google on its annual directory of Best Places to Work for GLBT Equality.
