Notoriously 'anti-gay' MP Ruth Kelly to stand down as MP

"She has been absent from a number of key parlimentary votes affecting the LBGT community"

Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly has today announced to local constituents that she will be standing down as an MP. She is expected to leave her role in a parliamentary reshuffle later today.

In her relatively short political career Kelly has been no stranger to controversy. In 2006, Prime Minister Tony Blair appointed her as Minister of Equality, despite her poor record regarding gay rights.

Over the years she has been absent from a number of key parlimentary votes affecting the LBGT community, notably bills on sexual orientation regulations, civil partnerships and any reform in adoption laws.

The MP for Bolton West is a member of the controversial Roman Catholic group Opus Dei, but despite the religion’s views on homosexuality she has never openly stated that she regards homosexuality as a sin.

Kelly has said that she is stepping down from politics to spend more time with her four children. She does however hold a marginal seat with Labour that, according to polls, is likely to be lost in the next election.
