'That's so gay'

Hilary Duff speaks out against homophobic language
US celebs tell students to 'knock it off' over homophobic language
"this campaign will open their eyes to the dangers of using this language and, ultimately, create a safer environment for LGBT students"
New American television adverts will raise awareness about homophobic language typically used in schools.
The campaign is aimed at straight teenagers, and adults including school personnel and teachers. It particularly focuses on the phrase 'that's so gay' which is often used so casually, to very harmful effect, and tells students who use this phrase to 'knock it off.'
The adverts will be distributed to 33,000 media stations across the United States, and will also feature on radio, print, outdoor and Web advertising. The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and The Advertising Council have pioneered the campaign, which features various celebrities, including Hilary Duff and Wanda Sykes.
It is hoped that the multi-media advertising campaign will prevent the use amongst teenagers of anti-LGBT language and will encourage them to intervene when this does occur.
Peggy Conlon, President & CEO of the Advertising Council said:
"We are proud to join with GLSEN on this very important campaign, the first to address the common use of anti-LGBT language and its harmful effects.
"When we tested the new ads with teens, they found the approach to be realistic and identifiable. I believe this campaign will open their eyes to the dangers of using this language and, ultimately, create a safer environment for LGBT students."
