LGBT students: the higher education experience

Equality Challenge Unit
The experience of LGBT university students to be examined for the first time
"It will be the first of its kind, and will establish whether gay students feel differently to other students about their time spent at university."
The survey has been commissioned by the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU), which promotes equality for staff and students in the higher education sector in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It will be the first of its kind, and will establish whether gay students feel differently to other students about their time spent at university.
The results will also enable the ECU to determine the issues that directly affect LGBT students. This will impact upon the unit’s ability to assist with education and lifestyle barriers, career progress and university choices.
Led by Professor Gill Valentine, Professor Paul Plummer and Dr. Nichola Wood from the University of Leeds, the survey will be published in March 2009, and will be distributed across the majority of higher education institutions.
The findings will allow the ECU to support those institutions in realising the potential of LGBT students.
The survey will be available online until 14 November, and can be found at www.equalsurvey.co.uk
