Former Transport Secretary to vote against lesbians having fertility treatment

Ruth Kelly "against embryology bill"
MP Ruth Kelly will reportedly vote against the Embryology Bill
"The notoriously ââ¬Ëanti-gayââ¬â¢ MP has a poor record regarding gay rights"
Former Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly is reported to be voting against the Embryology Bill that will grant lesbians access to fertility treatment.
A vote on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill was won in the Commons last May, but three Roman Catholic ministers, Ruth Kelly being among them, voted against the bill. Kelly is expected to place the same vote when the bill comes up for review on Wednesday 22nd October.
The notoriously ‘anti-gay’ MP has a poor record regarding gay rights. In 2006, Prime Minister Tony Blair caused controversy by appointing her as Minister of Equality, despite the fact she’d been absent from a number of key parliamentary votes affecting the LBGT community. These notably included bills on sexual orientation regulations, civil partnerships and reform in adoption laws.
Today the Daily Telegraph reported that, according to a close friend, Kelly “feels very strongly about this legislation, and she needs to cast her vote against it”.
The MP for Bolton West is a member of the controversial Roman Catholic group Opus Dei, which regards homosexuality as a sin.
Last month Kelly announced that she was to stand down as a Member of Parliament to spend more time with her four daughters. However, rumours perpetuate that she is doing so to demonstrate her solidarity with the Roman Catholic leaders who have openly condemned numerous gay rights bills initiated by the Labour government, including the Embryology Bill.
