Trans protest at ââ¬ËLBG transphobicââ¬â¢ Stonewall Awards
"Ms Bindel is advocating talking therapies for trans people in a way that almost entirely parallels the advocacy of talking therapies by the Christian right as a way of extirpating all LGBT people."
Last night’s Stonewall Awards saw protests from the transgendered community, who expressed their concern over what is seen as ‘LGB transphobia’ by by the organisation.
In particular the protest focused on Stonewall’s decision to nominate Julie Bindel of The Guardian for the Journalist of the Year award.
Bindel had apologised for the tone of previous article ‘Gender Benders Beware’, which questioned childhood diagnosis of Gender Identity Disorder (GID).
London Transfeminist Group campaigner Ros Kaveney said:
"Ms Bindel is advocating talking therapies for trans people in a way that almost entirely parallels the advocacy of talking therapies by the Christian right as a way of extirpating all LGBT people.
"If she does not understand that, as a lesbian, she is a turkey advocating Christmas for turkeys in an adjacent bit of the farmyard, then she is being obtuse; what she is doing is betraying not only the trans community but the entire LGBT community, and it is wrong to honour her for her other work when there is this colossal stain on her career."
Trans activists had originally demanded that Bindel’s nomination was revoked, but Stonewall insisted the complaints had come in after voting had taken place and any change in the line-up would have compromised the integrity of the outcome.
While Julie Bindel lost out on the Journalist of the Year award, which went to The Daily Mirror’s Miriam Stoppard, other winners of the evening included Stella Duffy as Writer of the Year, Sue Perkins as Entertainer of the Year, Time Out as publication of the Year.
The only award of the evening to be chosen by Stonewall supporters was Hero of the Year, which was awarded to Rt Revd Gene Robinson, the openly gay Bishop of New Hampshire who endured personal attacks during the church debate on homosexuality and was recently barred from the Lambeth Conference.
