Dating site eHarmony abandons ‘heteros-only’ policy

"eHarmony settled the lawsuit out of court and has until March 2009 to set up sister company Compatible Partners exclusively for gays and lesbians"

An online dating site that faced criticism for its staunch heterosexuals-only policy has agreed to set up an alternative site specifically for gay and lesbian singles.

The site, eHarmony, settled the lawsuit out of court and now has until March 2009 to set up sister company Compatible Partners exclusively for gays and lesbians.

The lawsuit, which was originally filed by Eric McKinley in 2005 under the state’s Law Against Discrimination was backed by the New Jersery's attorney general. eHarmony paid a total of $5,000 to Mr McKinley and an additional $50,000 to cover costs.

A representative of eHarmony said in a statement:

"Although we believed that the complaint resulted from an unfair characterisation of our business, we ultimately decided it was best to settle with the attorney general since litigation outcomes can be unpredictable,"

The company founder originally argued that eHarmony’s remit was to match singles with view to marriage. His case against allowing homosexuals to register cited the illegal status of gay marriage as a reason and revealed that eHarmony’s matching facility was based on studies of married couples.

The popular dating agency, which is heavily advertised on Christian websites, states:

"eHarmony’s patented Compatibility Matching System® allows eHarmony members to be matched with compatible persons with whom they are likely to enjoy a long-term relationship.

"Millions of people of all ages, ethnicities, national origins and religious and political beliefs have used eHarmony's Compatibility Matching System to find compatible long-term relationships.”

And as of March 2009, of all sexualities too.
