IKEA accused of ââ¬Ëpromotingââ¬â¢ homosexuality by Catholic website
"Itââ¬â¢s not the first time IKEA has featured same-sex couples in its advertising. In 1994 they produced what is thought to be the first commercial featuring a gay couple."
Polish Catholics have claimed that pictures of same-sex couples in IKEA catalogues ‘promotes’ homosexuality and have called for a boycott of the company.
They have accused the Swedish company of ‘trampling’ on the Christian idea of family and believe that a boycott of the popular furniture retailer is the only option to pressure the company into changing its ads.
Leading the boycott is Catholic website Fronda.pl. Editor-in-chief Grzegorz Górny said of the offending ads that treating single-sex relationships on a par with married couples was impermissible, and that IKEA's publication was a promotion of a particular style of living undeserving of public propogation.
IKEA have defended their decision to include same-sex couples in their advertising campaign, with spokesperson Karolina Horoszczak stating:
"Homosexuality is one of the essential elements of living in contemporary society,"
It’s not the first time IKEA has featured same-sex couples in its advertising. In 1994 they produced what is thought to be the first commercial featuring a gay couple. However the ad was aired only once. Founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, the company currently employs 120,000 people worldwide.
