Mark Malone jailed for life for murdering gay man in toilet
"The jury heard how Malone, who was married with two young children, had attacked another man in the same toilets just months before murdering Mr. Akers."
Thirty year-old Mark Malone has been sentenced to life in prison following the murder of retired accountant Jeff Akers in a public toilet in Walton, Surrey
Convicted at The Old Bailey last month, the jury heard how Mr. Malone stole a knife from a nearby burger van and went into the toilets, which were a well known meeting place for sex, to kill Mr. Akers.
Malone told the court Mr. Akers had propositioned him for sex and he reacted by lashing out, but claimed not to remember the actual attack.
Mr. Akers, 50, was taken to Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey by air ambulance after he was found slumped outside the toilet with the eight inch blade sticking out of his back. He died in hospital.
Senior Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Mark Preston-Heard, said after the verdict:
“This was a vicious, unprovoked homophobic attack by Mark Malone on a harmless, innocent man.
During the trial the jury heard how Malone, who was married with two young children, had attacked another man in the same toilets just months before murdering Mr. Akers. He had also served three months in prison for previously attacking an autistic man who Malone thought the man was gay.
Mr. Malone will serve at least 30 years in prison. He begins his life sentence today.
The public toilets in Walton are to be demolished as a result of the attack.
