Brad Pitt speaks out in support of gay marriage... again!
"In September of last year he donated $100,000 (ã65,500) towards the campaign against Proposition 8"
Brad Pitt has told W magazine that he supports gay marriage, and compared those who deny its importance don’t understand basic freedoms.
He told the latest issue of the American magazine:
"People who are against gay marriage do not understand the very freedoms that they themselves are enjoying.
"What if someone said, 'Sorry, no Christianity here? No Judaism. Certainly no Mormons.'
"No one would stand for that, and I wouldn't allow anyone to say that either.
"I'd fight them in the same way."
It’s not the first time Brad Pitt has demonstrated his support for gay marriage. In September of last year he donated $100,000 (£65,500) towards the campaign against Proposition 8, and in 2006 he said that he and long-term partner Angelina Jolie would not even consider getting married while same-sex marriage remained illegal. In a statement the actor said:
"Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn't harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8."
Despite his, and many other high profile celebrities’ support, Proposition 8 was passed with 52% of the vote.
In May 2008. same-sex marriage in California was officially legalised after the Supreme Court ruled that treating people differently based on their sexual orientation violates the equal protection clause of the California Constitution.
After the bill was passed more than 18,000 gay and lesbian couples were married in the State before Proposition 8 was passed on 4th November.
Since then supporters of Prop 8 have requested that all marriages performed in that time be invalidated. However in the cintunued fight against the law, gay rights groups have submitted documents to the California Supreme Court, with signed petitions requesting Proposition 8 be declared null and void.
W magazine, featuring the cover interview with Brad Pitt, is out now.
