LGBT History Month begins

February 2009 sees the fifth LGBT History Month take place around the country.
The LGBT History Month takes place every year in February and celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community both in the past and the present day.
Hundreds of gay-themed events have been arranged across the UK, including talks, discussions, performance art, theatre and music workshops and exhibitions celebrating all aspects of LGBT history and culture.
The LGBT History Month is supported by the Government, including the Department of Health, and the Department for Children, Schools and Families, as well as the TUC.
There is a particular focus on youth in an effort to end the invisibility of LGBT people in schools and colleges, and tackle homophobic bullying.
Highlights include Hello Sailor in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, an acclaimed exhibition looking at the lives for the crews on passenger and merchant ships from the 1950s to the 1980s, when being at sea was one of the few places gay men could be themselves.
Out and About in the National Gallery searches for the queer content in the London gallery’s collection of paintings; and Nottinghamshire's Rainbow Heritage will be presenting a visual record of Nottingham Pride events from 1997 - 2008.
