Iceland appoints first openly gay PM
By: Nigel Robinson

Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir

Iceland has appointed the world's first openly gay Prime Minister.

Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir was made interim leader of Iceland until elections in May, following the collapse of the cabinet of former Prime Minister Geir Haardie in the wake of the current economic crisis.

Ms Sigurdardottir is one of Iceland’s most popular politicians and its longest serving MP. She has served as Minister of Social Affairs and Social Security.

She originally worked as an air hostess before becoming involved in the trade union movement, and was elected to the Althing, the Icelandic Parliament, in 1978 as a member of the Social Democratic Party, later the Social Democratic Alliance.

Ms Sigurdardottir entered into a civil partnership with the writer Jónína Leósdótt in 2002..
