Fr Gerhard Wagner, a priest whose homophobic rants have included calling the Harry Potter books the “work of Satan” and Hurricane Katrina New Orleans’ "divine retribution" for being tolerant of gay and lesbian people, has been made a bishop by the Pope.
Only last month the Pope credited homosexuals with the destruction of the rainforest and has claimed that gay people are a threat to humanity. He also suggested that transgender people would lead to the extinction of the human race.
The Pope has previously labelled any non-heterosexual relationship "a destruction of God's work” and has said man must be protected "from the destruction of himself".
Wagner has served as the pastor of a church in the Austrian town of Windischgarsten since 1988, and received a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian Pontifical University in Rome.
His comments to a parish newsletter about Hurricane Katrina in 2005 also claimed that the hurricane had specifically destroyed nightclubs, brothels and abortion clinics as payment for the nation’s liberalism.
