Courage Campaign's new video seeking to invalidate Proposition 8 pleas, "Don't Divorce Us"

"Fidelity is a reaction to Ken Starr and the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund’s request that all marriages performed in that time are nullified"

Californian activists The Courage Campaign have released a video to support their initiative to invalidate Proposition 8.

Called ‘Fidelity’, after the Regina Spektor song featured on the soundtrack, the film shows some of the 18,000 couples to have got married in between May and November of last year, when same-sex marriage was officially legal in California.

Fidelity is a reaction to Ken Starr and the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund’s request that all marriages performed in that time are nullified. The touching four-minute montage features married couples, friends, family, co-workers and children and asking California not to 'divorce' them.

The film was handed in to the Supreme Court to support a petition signed by thousands of those opposing and questioning the validity of Proposition 8.

On 5th March, 2009, the California Supreme Court will hear arguments for and against Proposition 8, which outlaws marriage between same-sex couples in the state. A decision is expected within the next 90 days.

Writing in December of last year, President of the United States of America, Barack Obama told the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgendered Democratic Club:

"For too long, issues of LGBT rights have been exploited by those seeking to divide us. It's time to move beyond polarization and live up to our founding promise of equality by treating all our citizens with dignity and respect."

The Courage Campaign is running an online petition, which will remain open until - somewhat fittingly - Valentines Day. To add your name to the petition and watch the video, Fidelity, click here.
