Transsexual Mafia boss known as Kitty is arrested by police in Naples
"He was a key figure in the Camorra and ran a drugs and prostiution racket out by the airport"
Transsexual Mafia boss Ugo Gabriele, known as Kitty, has been arrested by Italian police after being trailed by the authorities for several months.
The 27-year old Gabriele was one of 27 other mobsters to be arrested in the armed raid. The Mafia, known locally as the ‘Camorra’, find themselves accused of running a sophisticated drugs and prostitution racket.
A police spokesman said of the arrests:
“We have been on Kitty's trail for several months and it is the first time that we have ever arrested a transsexual Mob boss.
“We think it is also probably the first case of its kind in the world.
“He was born Ugo Gabriele but told everyone to call him Kitty - he is very burly but at the same time you can tell he is trying to be a woman.
“He was a key figure in the Camorra and ran a drugs and prostiution racket out by the airport.
“We had tried to arrest him earlier this week but he escaped but thanks to good police work we found him and arrested 27 other Camorra members.”
The Mafia, traditionally portrayed as exclusively heterosexual and ‘macho’, has in the past looked unfavourably on any ‘deviant’ from heterosexuality, although top Mafia author Luigi Romolo Carrino suggests:
“There is a lot more homosexual activity in the Mob than you think but it is very discreet.”
To date, the most famous gay Mafia member was John 'Johnny Boy' D'Amato who was murdered in 1992 for being gay. Mafia hit man Anthony Capo testified that he killed D'Amato when he discovered his sexuality.
Speaking in court Capo said:
“Nobody's gonna respect us if we have a gay homosexual boss sitting down discussing La Cosa Nostra business.”
