God Hates Fags church to protest in UK this weekend?

"The Laramie Project has a special resonance for WBC as their first ever public outing was picketing murdered gay student Matthew Shepard’s funeral."

The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), who are famously homophobic, claim that they will be bringing their unique brand of hatred to the UK this weekend.

The group, founded by the infamous Fred Phelps, claim to be picketing a performance of The Laramie Project in Basingstoke this Saturday. It’s been reported that gay groups have organised a counter-protest at the venue.

The Laramie Project tells the true story of the murder of openly gay student Matthew Shepard in 1998 and how the Wyoming community of Laramie reacted to the crime. The subject has a special resonance for the Westboro Church as their first ever public outing was picketing Shepard’s funeral.

The Westboro Church consists of only around 60 members, most of whom are related to founder Fred Phelps. They are notorious for picketing the funerals of US soldiers killed in action and their controversial publicity including posters claiming ‘God Hates Fags’, ‘Fag Troops’ and ‘Thank God for Dead Fag Soldiers’.

They claim that the deaths of servicemen and women, and natural disasters like hurricane Katrina are God’s way of punishing the nation for ‘tolerating homosexuals’.

So far there are no known supporters of the organisation in the UK, although the church have suggested otherwise. Ms. Roper-Phelps told the Daily Telegraph:

"It is the first actual picket. We have been preaching by so many means to the UK for years.

"The arm of the Lord our God is not shortened by oceans and things, all of which he created, and all of which he knew about when he considered these last hours of the very last days of all."

The controversial Church’s much-publicised picketing of funerals has caused so much distress that they have been banned from doing so in 22 states across America.

They hit the headlines last month when they decided to protest at Barack Obama’s inauguration. They claim Obama, along with many other politicians, film stars, musicians, writers and others in the public eye, are ‘fag enablers’ for supporting LGBT rights.
