Elton John’s annual Oscar night fundraiser raises millions for AIDS charity

"The total raised by the end of the night was almost $4 million (£2.75 million)"

Sir Elton John and partner David Furnish held their annual fundraiser party for the Elton John AIDS Foundation last night.

Traditionally held on Oscar night, the fundraising event is invariably attended by Hollywood’s A-list, and traditionally raises millions for the cause.

This year was no disappointment with guests including Victoria Beckham, Sir Ben Kingsley, Quincy Jones, Keifer Sutherland, Whoopi Goldberg, John Walters, Sharon Stone, Chace Crawford and Gordon Ramsey amongst many more.

Through auctioning special items, stars raise millions for the cause which has raised more than $150 million since it was founded by the Sir Elton John in 1992.

Items auctioned this year included the opportunity to dance with Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show and a tennis lesson by tennis champion Andy Roddick.

The total raised by the end of the night was almost $4 million, which is £2.75 million.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation supports HIV/AIDS prevention and care in 55 countries around the world. Of the funds raised 90 percent goes to direct care, and 10 percent to AIDS prevention education.
