A Polish politician has slammed his local zoo for acquiring a gay elephant.
“We didn’t pay 37 million zlotys (£7.5 million) for the largest elephant house in Europe to have a gay elephant live there,” fumed Michal Grzes, a councillor in Poznan, Poland, and member of the right-wing Law and Justice Party.
The elephant called Ninio prefers the company of other bulls. He has shown a marked hostility to female elephants.
“We were supposed to have a herd, but as Ninio prefers male friends over females, how will he produce any offspring?” Mr Grzes wanted to know.
Zoo officials say that Ninio, who is only ten years old, may still be too young to decide whether he likes males or females. Elephants only reach sexual maturity at 14.
Homosexuality among humans has been legal in Poland since 1932.
