Doctors have criticised a conference promoting medical treatment for homosexuality.
The Sex & the City event is being held over the weekend of 24th and 25th April at a central London venue.
Attendees will hear from American psychologist Dr Joseph Nicolosi who has claimed that he has been helping people “increase their heterosexual potential” for twenty-five years.
He is an officer of NARTH – the National Association for research and Therapy of Homosexuality – whose mission statement includes giving “effective psychological care” to “individuals with unwanted homosexual attraction.”
Dr Nicolosi told BBC News: “We have a great deal of evidence showing that these individuals are not harmed and that the therapy does work.
“We are petitioning the American Psychiatric Association to look at the scientific data.”
However, a spokesman for the Royal College of Psychiatrists has said; “There is no sound scientific evidence that sexual orientation can be changed.
“Furthermore, so-called treatments of homosexuality create a setting in which prejudice and discrimination can flourish.”
The two-day event is being organised by the conservative Anglican Mainstream group.
