Rainbow flag honours murdered teen

The flag will fly on the International Day against Homophobia

The rainbow flag is to fly over Liverpool Town Hall for the first time

"we want to do everything we can to promote diversity in this great city"

Council officials will raise the flag on Sunday to mark the International Day Against Homophobia (Idaho).

This follows the murder ten months ago of local gay teenager Michael Causer who was beaten to death in a vicious homophobic attack.

James O’Connor, 19, of Runcorn admitted murdering Mr Causer in the Huyton area of the city and was sentenced to life imprisonment at Liverpool Crown Court in March.

The Lord Mayor, Steve Rotheram, will present Mr Causer’s parents with a book of condolences containing thousands of signatures.

The Lord Mayor said: "Sunday's event will be a great opportunity for people to not only enjoy themselves but to also get involved with shaping a future Pride festival in the city.

"Homophobia is unacceptable and we want to do everything we can to promote diversity in this great city.”

Idaho is held worldwide on 17 May every year, the date in 1992 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases.
