Greater Manchester: huge rise in hate crime
Homophobic attacks are on the increase in the UK
That is the opinion of senior police following a spate of murders of gay men.
Statistics provided by Scotland Yard show a 9% rise in homophobic crimes to 1,372 in the past year.
Shockingly, there has been a 63% rise in homophobic crime in the Greater Manchester area from 327 to 533 in the year to April 2008.
Acting Detective Superintendent Gerry Campbell of the Metropolitan Police said: “Homophobia cannot be considered a thing of the past. It’s on the increase.”
According to Crown Prosecution Service figures, prosecutions for homophobic crimes have risen 60% over the past two years.
