A gay man has been voted his high school Prom Queen
Sergio Garcia, 18, a student at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, beat eight other (female) competitors to win the coveted title.
Garcia said that when he saw that the flyers advertising the contest did not specify a gender, he decided to run for prom queen rather than king.
"I'm very flamboyant," he said. "I thought, 'I can relate myself more to a queen, and if I win that title it will be the best thing that's ever happened to me. This for me was like growing up and taking a step forward."
According to the CBS station KCBS-TV, Fairfax High School is swell known for its diversity
"It's an example of the culture we're trying to create at this school," said Principal Ed Zubiate. "He ran and he won."

During his acceptance speech Garcia said: “At one time, prom may have been a big popularity contest where the best-looking guy or girl were crowned king and queen. Things have changed and it's no longer just about who has the most friends or who wears the coolest clothes.”
