BBC documentary reveals 'hundreds' of killings of gays in Iraq

BBC Radio 5
Saddam's rule 'better' for Iraqi gays
A BBC Radio 5 Live documentary, to be broadcast on July 12, includes interviews with Iraqis who say that the murders of LGBT people have run into the hundreds since 2003, and with others who claim that the violence has intensified in recent months. All of the LGBT Iraqis interviewed for Gay Life After Saddam said that their lives were easier during the dictator's reign of terror.
Some interviewees speak fondly of the flourishing underground gay culture that existed before the war, which has been replaced, as the documentary finds, by evidence of incidents of horrific violence and murder, some of them graphically described by witnesses. Some blame militia for the rise in attacks, others accuse religious leaders of inciting hatred against LGBT people.
Gay Life After Saddam will be broadcast on Radio 5 Live at 9pm on Sunday July 12.
