Research shows changing sexual orientation unlikely and harmful

No turning back for gays

American Psychological Association rejects gay-to-straight 'therapy'

The American Psychological Association (APA) has issued a declaration saying that mental health professionals should not advise gay clients that they can become straight through therapy or other treatments. It is its most strongly-worded and comprehensive rejection thus far of 'reparative therapy' - a theory promoted by a small group of therapists, often connected with conservative religious organisations, who believe that gays can change their sexual orientation.

No solid evidence exists that such change is likely, said the APA's resolution, which was adopted by its governing council with a vote of 125-4. Its accompanying report included research suggesting that harmful effects could result from attempting to produce change, including depression and suicidal tendencies. The APA urged therapists to consider multiple options rather than attempt change, ranging from switching churches to celibacy, in their efforts to help clients live spiritually rewarding lives when their sexual orientation and religious beliefs are incompatible.
